What is my Portrait Session Process?

Every photographer has a different approach to their photo sessions.  The processes from planning to delivering products can vary radically.  I think there is not a right or wrong approach, it is just a matter of finding the right match for your expectations.

So, what can you expect when you book a portrait photo session with me? Let’s go over the general steps:

Book your session date
After you contact me via phone or the contact form from my website, we schedule a phone call to go over any questions regarding the type of session you are envisioning. Feel free to ask any questions regarding pricing, products, locations, etc. If you decide you want to book a session, we pencil in a date in the calendar. I will send you an email with payment options. Your session deposit officially books your session.

Most portrait sessions take place during sunrise or a few hours before sunset. I simply love the flattering lighting conditions at these times. 9 out of 10 times I use flash gear to add a natural fill light to the setting/rising sun. It helps to ensure great photos under any conditions, unless it is raining…

The majority of clients book sessions on weekends so those dates need to be reserved way in advance.

Pre-Shoot Consultation

This is a very important part of the process where we pin down session and product expectations. We can speak over the phone, meet at a convenient location or if you are planning to decorate your home with the photos, then I can meet you at your home and photograph the walls where you are planning to hang your photos. They are useful later in the process to make accurate mock-ups of your wall gallery. We can go over wardrobe choices to make sure there is a cohesive style for the whole family. I will also provide you with wardrobe suggestions and a guideline. If you have children, this could be an excellent opportunity to introduce myself so that they are a tad familiar with me before the session. The whole point of this is to make images that are uniquely you and your family.

Portrait Session

Most portrait sessions take at least one hour. It really depends on the attention span of kids and your particular family dynamic. I block off two hours for every portrait shoot. This allows for water breaks, outfit changes, etc.

Depending on the location and your familiarity with it, we take a few minutes to explore the options.  Locations may offer many backgrounds, but it is really up to you and your family to decide how much ground we can cover. For instance, if your children love the sand and don’t mind the Florida heat, then we can schedule a session at a beach connected to boardwalks or a park.  If you have little children, it may be better to stay in one small area and get all the shots that involve posing first. Later in the session, we can capture the candid images.

Viewing your Photos and Placing your Print Order
1. At Home Viewing  or  2. Online Gallery

In most cases, I’ll come to your house to show you the selected photos from the session. We can plug into your TV or we can use my laptop. We go through the images a few times so that you can pick your favorites. Those photos can be used right on the spot to create a digital mock-up.  You will see the way the photos will look on your wall which takes the size guessing game out of the equation. We can place an order right at this meeting with confidence that the correct sizes have been selected.

I use a high-quality professional photo lab and I will show you samples of the products I offer. I personally inspect every product that my clients order to ensure there are no issues. Depending on the final order, I may personally deliver your wall art or print order.

This whole process has been tailored to ensure your printed products look their absolute best.  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or if you prefer to receive a link to a photo gallery.
